Freedom from Law
Romans 7
When our country’s founders signed the Declaration of Independence, they were screaming at England that they would no longer obey THEIR laws.
Today, I want to tell you that there is 1 set of laws you don’t need to be keeping.
You need to hear this!
Now, I am not saying that there are laws in America that we should not obey.
Every believer in Jesus knows that we should be obedient to all the law of our country
But the set of laws I was referring to are the Old Testament Laws. We are Free from the OT Law.
There are about 612 laws considered to be the OT law, or The Law of Moses.
The 1st 10, the 10 Commandments, are just an overview of all the other laws.
The bad part about the OT laws was, that if you wanted God’s blessings — including heaven, you had to keep all 612 laws perfectly.
- You could never miss a festival
- You were always making some sacrifice
- either in the form of a thanks offering,
- or a wave offering,
- and every year at Passover you had to offer an unblemished 1-year-old lamb for your sins.
- You were required to give a tithe (10%) of everything you had.
- So you weighed out our salt, flour, barley, oil, and all the seasons so you could give 10%.
- You could never say anything bad about anyone
- How many national politicians would have a chance at heaven?
- And it was always very hard to keep from having other gods.
- AND YOU WERE NEVER ALLOWED TO MAKE A MISTAKE OF ANY KIND.
The OT laws were not designed to save the people, although it could if kept perfectly.
It was designed to teach people about sin.
- Romans 7:7-8 ESV What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” (8) But sin, seizing an opportunity through the commandment, produced in me all kinds of covetousness. …
And we saw in another video from the Freedom series, that sin, if not dealt with, will pay us death.
But there is hope!
- Romans 7:6 ESV But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.
- Galatians 3:10-14 ESV For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them.” (11) Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for “The righteous shall live by faith.” (12) But the law is not of faith, rather “The one who does them shall live by them.” (13) Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— (14) so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
What does all this mean to you?
- You are not meant to keep the 10 commandments.
- Besides all but 1 has been repeated in the NT.
- You don’t have to keep everything perfectly.
- You should try for perfection, but when you do make a mistake, you are not lost forever.
- You have freedom from Law.
How do you get this freedom from Law?
- You come to a faith that Jesus is the son of God
- You speak of your faith to others.
- You change from your selfish sinful ways to following Jesus’ ways
- You trust that His way works — and does it ever!!!
- You allow yourself to be baptized into Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection, as we talk about in the video Freedom from Sin
- You start living a Grace-based life.
- A new life.
- 2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
I hope you will enjoy your Independence Day this year.
And I hope you can experience the grand life of being Free from OT law.
