Freedom from Sin, Rom 6

We are about to celebrate the nation’s birthday and the freedoms we have in this country. We have more freedoms than other countries.

But are we free from Sin? Are we in control?

You need to watch this.

You may be under the control of sin.

Let’s see if it is a problem.

We can begin reading in Romans 6 and find many phrases that describe our freedom, or lack thereof

• Romans 6:6 ESV We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.
• Romans 6:12 ESV Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.
• Romans 6:14 ESV For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
• Romans 6:16 ESV Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
• Romans 6:19 ESV I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.
• Romans 6:20 ESV For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.

And what is the results of this sin-controlled life?

• Romans 6:23 ESV For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

So, let’s see if this is really true?

• Can an alcoholic just put down the bottle and walk away without some type of consequences?
• Can someone hooked on pain relievers, just flush them down the toilet with no problems?
• Any person with strong sexual activity can’t just walk away from everyone they know.
  • The homosexual or lesbian can’t just quit. They are involved with others who will bring them back in.
• I have heard jailers say, “Once a thief, always a thief…”
• How easy is it to stop lying; to admit to lies; to start all over again telling only the truth?

Yes, the Bible is true.

Sin is in control.

We are its slave

We do what it says we should do.

So how do we change?

How can we gain lasting freedom from Sin?

What will it take to break sins chains?

The answer is not complicated, but it is a challenge.

The answer is Death.

• Your death.
• Your death to self.
• Romans 6:3-7

When you die to self, you put Christ in charge.

He can decide what is best

And the result is wonderful.

• Romans 6:16-18 ESV Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?  (17)  But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed,  (18)  and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.
