Judgment: All Secrets Revealed
You’ve probably heard of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He’s the writer who invented the character of Sherlock Holmes. But in his day, Arthur Conan Doyle was a notorious prankster.
One time, he sent out a bunch of invitations to the Mayor’s Ball, and a bunch of people who shouldn’t have been there ended up being there. You may have heard of the Pit Down Man. It was one of the so-called missing links that were found.
Turns out it was a hoax, and a lot of people think Doyle was responsible for it. But probably my favorite one of his pranks was when he sent a telegram to several of his friends that said, all is discovered, flee at once. Within 24 hours, all of them had fled town.
It seems all of us have something that we don’t want the world to know, a secret that we don’t want to get out. But when it comes to judgment, all secrets will be revealed.
You’re watching Timeless Talks. Timeless subjects. Information for life.
The Bible tells us that we will all appear before the judgment seat to give an account of what we have done, whether good or bad.
Jesus says that in the final days, all those secrets of men will be revealed. Many of us in our lives have things that we wish no one else would find out. We don’t want our friends to know the secrets that we keep from others, even the secrets that we keep from ourselves.
So when it comes to judgment, should we have any confidence if we know there are things that are about us that we don’t want anyone to know? Because God knows all. All the secret things that we’ve done. Everything, whether we’ve done good or bad, God knows.
So how can we have any confidence when it comes to judgment? That’s where we have some help from John. In 1 John, John tells us about the confidence that we can have in Christ Jesus. He says, ” This is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that God is light and in him is no darkness at all.
What that verse is telling us is simply that if we want to be God, we can’t have darkness in us. We can’t be in sin. Many people have confidence in judgment, even though their life is full of sin, sin that nothing has ever been done with, sin that is still held against them.
John would say if we have fellowship with him, but walk in darkness, we lie, and the truth is not in us. See, we can fool ourselves into thinking that we’re right with God when our lives are full of darkness. But John also tells us that if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another and the blood of Jesus continually cleanses us from all sin.
So that means if we think we couldn’t possibly be right, there’s no way that we can be in judgment. We can have some confidence because if we walk in the light, if we continue to try to do what’s right, Jesus can still cleanse us from all sin. He continues in verse eight and says, if we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us from all. You know, if we think that we don’t have any sin, we’re in a state of judgment because we all sin, all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. We have to recognize the sin in our lives.
It doesn’t mean that we accept it. We try to do something about it, but we need to recognize it’s there. If we can’t see the sin in our lives, we’re probably fooling ourselves about what’s really there.
But the main problem when we see ourselves and our secrets is that we know the things that we’ve done, and we don’t think we have any way to deal with them. And once again, John helps us out by telling us, my little children, I’m writing these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, he has an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous, and he himself is the propitiation for our sins, not only for ours, but for the whole world.
John’s telling us that we have someone on our side, an advocate, a lawyer, someone who will represent us, someone who understands us, who understands us because he lived like us, yet without the sin. But he understands the temptations we face because he faced them as well. And because we have Jesus Christ, we can have a hope of judgment.
That’s why it’s so important that we consider our relationship with Jesus Christ. If we say to ourselves, we don’t have any sin, we’re fooling ourselves. We’re not seeing what’s really there.
If we say to ourselves that our sin is so big it can’t be overcome, then we don’t understand the power of Jesus’s sacrifice. But if we look at the relationship that we have to Christ, if we are in him and we follow him and walk in the light, then we know that we have one who advocates for us, one that can cover our sins. That’s why it’s important to consider what John says in the last section of these verses.
He says we know we have come to know him if we keep his commandments. How do we know that we have a right relationship with Jesus Christ? It’s simple. We follow his commandments.
Jesus would tell his disciples, if you love me, you keep my commandments. See, we keep the commandments of Christ not because we are perfectionists, but rather because we understand the perfection that comes from him. By keeping his commandments, we maintain that relationship with Jesus Christ.
We walk in the light. See, judgment is a thing that might scare many of us. We might respond in fear with judgment because we’re worried about all the secret things.
Like Doyle’s friends, we might be ready to run and leave town. But if we have Jesus Christ, if we walk in the light, if we follow his commandments, judgment shouldn’t be a thing that scares us at all. You might be thinking about the judgment to come right now.
