Memaw TTWT Talk,  08/26/22

I don’t know what kind of grandma you had, but my Memaw taught me how to be like Jesus. She taught me 4 attributes. Ladies, if you want to know what they are, wait a few seconds!

Hi. I’m Diana Majors, Tim Estes’s daughter.

I really miss Memaw. I keep wanting to call or visit with her. I can’t, but I can continue to learn from her Christian example.

Attribute #1: She was compassionate, meaning she was sympathetic for the misfortunes or sufferings of others. One of Memaw’s favorite places was Southern Christian Home in Morrilton, AR, a faith-based residential foster care system. She had compassion for those children., and I saw her doing what Jesus would want. Jesus wants us to be full of compassion.

James 1:27 “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

How can you show compassion and to whom? Think about it and take action. Don’t just think, but do!

Attribute #2: She showed love by sharing. She would hand-stitch baby quilts at nearly every baby shower for a LONG time with Humpty Dumpty sitting on a red brick wall. As an adult, I would see her work-in-progress quilt pieces lying next to her favorite seat in the den. She gave of her time and skill to give the love of a handmade quilt for the baby. She made so many of these, at church she became known for making them.

Memaw taught me to be loving, as Christ loved. Jesus said in John 15:12, “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.” Verse 17, “This is my command: Love each other.” How can you share your blessings? It doesn’t have to be a lot, but make it count.

Attribute #3: Joy! She was a very joyful person!! If she wasn’t smiling, she had a look of contentment! She wasn’t only “happy”, but she seemed to be infused with the much deeper and more lasting feeling of joy!

Memaw often listened to tapes or CDs of Christian acapella singing. She loved the congregational singing where she worshipped at Clinton Church of Christ and enjoyed learning new songs. Singing to the LORD brought her joy and gave her another way to express her love for Jesus.

Psalm 100: 2 “Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.”

Ephesians 5: 18b-19, “Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Yessiree, Memaw was joyful! Is your heart joyful? If not, why not? Can we help? Or what do you have to be joyful about?

Attribute #4: Memaw was worshipful. I don’t recall her ever even considering missing a church service unless it was to care for her husband or she wasn’t physically able. “Are we going to church?” was never uttered at her house on a Sunday morning. We KNEW we were! It wasn’t somewhere she went, as a social destination; it was a building in which to worship our Lord and Creator with fellow Christians. It was a way of living. She didn’t worship the Lord only on Sunday morning, Sunday night, and Wednesday night. She worshipped while she cooked meals, tended her flower garden, shopped at Walmart, entertained company with a sweet dessert and a cup of hot coffee, or read her Bible. In everything she did, she tried to worship Jesus.

Hebrews 10: 24-25, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Colossians 3:17 “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Do you live a life of worship? If people don’t know you well, will they still know you have a relationship with God? It only takes a step, and before long your life will change for the better!

What does all this mean for you? I hope we all can take these attributes— having compassion, showing love by sharing with others, being joyful, and living worshipfully—and allowing it to touch our hearts, and to help us be better Christians and servants of Christ.
