Salt and Light: Discover the Power to Change Your World

How can Christians change their community or their workplace? What difference can a Christian make? What did Jesus mean by “light of the world?

INTRO

Matthew 5:13-16  “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.  (14)  “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.  (15)  Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.  (16)  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Followers of Jesus ARE SALT. They add spice to the lives of others. We add value to their lives. We SHOW and TEACH people how to treat others like they want to be treated (Matt 7:12). When a friend is having a really bad, no good kind of day (or week), we might touch them with a gentle, understanding hand. We empathize with their problems and give hope-filled guidance to get them back on track.

Followers of Jesus are VISIBLE, like a city on a hill. Christians can’t hide. We should not hide. Children of all ages, and people that know us are watching. They are looking for us to do something good. We need to be leading our friends toward Good. Maybe we are kind to an older widow lady. Maybe we give the mailman, or the FedEx driver a Little Debbie’s snack.

While writing this I was in the waiting room at a medical facility. I looked up and saw a woman get her Bible and start reading. I went to her and visited briefly. I told her how people are watching.

ALL Followers of Jesus are BEACONS. Some beacons are just bigger and brighter than others. Every Christian should radiate light, hope, and joy. We need to glow with peace, patience, kindness, and goodness. People need to see examples of faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, and love (Gal 5.22-23)

Is your influence bringing God Glory? Let’s re-read that verse Matt 5:16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. God, gets the glory. Not you.

How potent is your saltiness? When people watch you, and they do, what acts of kindness and thoughtfulness are they seeing? How strong is your “beacon”? Have you turned it off? Where is your hope, or patience, or self-control?

If is not being effective for Christ, it is being effective for Satan.

Maybe you need to do a turn-around.
