Time Is Up!
When is Jesus coming back? Are there signs we need to be watching for? If so, what are they? If not, then what? Get these answered in less than 8 minutes.
Intro
Recently, I was driving back home from a couple of Missouri speaking engagements when I saw along the side of the road a sign saying, “Time is Up. Jesus is Coming.”
The sign had a good idea. I wondered what the Bible would say, because people don’t seem to be able to get the date right.
People have been making guesses as to when Jesus will be back, and none have been correct. William Miller said Jesus would arrive on October 22, 1844. Didn’t happen. And Herbert Armstrong said it would happen sometime during 1975. I remember several events at the nation’s bicentennial in 1976, so Mr. Armstrong was wrong. And then, more recently, there was Harold Camping, known as the “Rapture Prophet”. He said it would be on May 20 & 21 of 2011, as reported by National Public Radio. NPR also reported the man’s death on December 17, 2013, about 2.5 years later. Wrong again. “Time is Up”, but not like they were thinking.
And here we are, asking the same question?
But why are we even asking it? Is it because we like living close to the edge? We want to keep doing what we think is ok for as long as possible. Then, near the last moment, we quickly make our changes to be right with God. We want heaven, but we also want earthly stuff and pleasures too.
So what should we be doing? Should we be watching the clock every moment?
God has given us answers if we are willing to accept them and live by them. He told Christians in Eph 5:8 “for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.” That is one thing we can do, now. A few verses later he said, Ephesians 5:15-16 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, (16) making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.” Paul wanted them to know that when it comes to living in darkness, “Time is Up”.
One of the easier-to-understand passages is 1 Pet 4:2-3. It tells us to “…live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. (3) For the time that is past suffices for doing what the Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions, drunkenness, orgies, drinking parties, and lawless idolatry.” Anyone who wishes to be a Christian certainly knows to stop the sins as listed in several locations in the New Testament. Peter was reminding them that they had spent enough time already doing those self-destructive, harmful ways. “Time is Up” for living sinful passions.
Jesus told us who knows when the great trumpet will sound and our “Time is UP”, speaking about when every life will change. He said, Mark 13:31-33 “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. (32) “But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. (33) Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come.”
Jesus is coming, and the time for living anyway we want is gone. Time is up.
