Intro
- What is the best thing to do when you getting your lights punched out? There are two answers you need.
Body
- Both answers you need are found in Luke 6:29
- “ To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either.”
- It is worth noting that this passage is similar to Matt 5:39-40
- But Matthew speaks of someone taking your things through legal maneuvers
- But Luke uses words with a violent tone.
- Words like strike you, hit you, slaps you.
- Luke 6.29 is about being punched, Beaten, bashed, clobbered or pounded.
- And then about losing their valuables
- In Jesus day those were the outer coat and then their shirt.
- Today, it might be your cell phone, wallet or purse, cash, or credit cards
- And then about losing their valuables
- So Jesus gives us answer #1
- Do NOT resist.
- Do not fight back.
- Do not scuffle or tussle
- Why? Jesus doesn’t want you to be injured.
- You may be beaten and bruised, but you can recover from this
- If you defy or put up a fight, you can wind up in a hospital or worse, the morgue.
- And then there is answer #2
- Instead of resisting, be cooperative.
- Give them whatever THING they want
- Jesus said,
- “Offer the other…”
- “Do not withhold…”
- Jesus is reminding us not to be too attached to the THINGS of this world.
- His answers are based on what is really important.
- The things of this world can always be replaced
- THINGS are disposable
- Your driver’s license can be replaced
- Your credit Cards, can be cancelled and replaced
- The worst is should be is a major inconvenience.
- 1 John 3:15 it is written “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
- Surviving such an encounter is more important than being a hero.
