3 questions on Isa 53

What were the reasons?

What was the process?

What are the benefits?

Opening.

What were the reasons that Jesus had to die?

What was involved in the process of his death?

What are the benefits to you?

Some of the answers are in Isa 53

We will use that text to answer the 1st of these questions in just a moment.

Body

Before we answer the question as to why Jesus had to die, some basic information must be proved.

  • God hates all sin, every sin, and has listed many in the Bible
    • Those lists can be provided to you using the email at the end of the video.
  • The penalty for intentionally or accidentally going against his commands is death.
    • Romans 3.23
    • There were some people in the O.T. that God “dropped dead” to remind people of how serious he was about not violating his commands.
  • Every man on earth has sinned and is now under the penalty of death.
    • So mankind, and each of us individually, desperately needs help.
    • We must get rid of sin, but we are not able to do it ourselves.
  • God developed a system, in the Old Testament, when animal sacrifices were used as substitutes for people dying for their sins.
    • The animal sacrifices could temporarily remove sin
    • But because people keep sinning, animals were continually being offered.
  • Jesus became the perfect human substitute because he remained sinless.

With this in mind, let’s answer the question What were the reasons that Jesus had to die?

Isa 53:5 says he was pierced because of OUR TRANSGRESSIONS.

  • Because we acted on decisions to disobey what He commanded.
    • That is what a transgression is – a “going against”
  • But also note that it was OUR actions, OUR disobedience.
    • God holds you and I responsible for “misbehaving”

Isa 53:5 also speaks of Jesus being “crushed for our iniquities”

  • “Iniquities” is not a word we use every day.
    • It means
      •  “not just”;
      • grossly unfair;
      • immoral behavior
      • lacking moral principles.
    • An example of iniquity is using your vehicle to take target practice with people in the crosswalk.
    • Unnecessarily endangering people is immoral.
      • So it would be an iniquity to intentionally go to ANY size gather if you KNOW you have COVID.
    • And you are participating in iniquity if you see something “not just”, but do nothing to stop it.
  • We have all done those kinds of things. We are all guilty at some point.
    • And Jesus died because of OUR INIQUITIES.

Isa 53 gives us a 3rd reason Jesus had to die.

  • We have already shown that each of us has defied God by going against His commands. Transgressed.
  • This puts us in opposition to God.
    • We have considered ourselves as wise as He is and therefore has the right to NOT DO His commands.
    • We are becoming his ENEMY.  James 4:4 (reference only)
  • We are not capable of re-establishing peace with God ourselves.
    • We need help
    • So, God CHASTIZED Jesus instead of us, as found in Isa 53.5
      • Jesus absorbed God’s corrective discipline
      • It was not just punishment.
      • God wants us to see how serious He is, how much he cares, and how much he loves us.

How does it feel to know that your actions are the reasons Jesus had to die?

  • it should not “feel“good”
    • That is your conscience working
    • And your conscience is a God-given gift.
    • Allow it to work.
