Woman at Well 4

Woman at the Well, part 4, coming up in just a moment.

John 4:16-19  Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”  (17)  The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’;  (18)  for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.”  (19)  The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.

Jesus had met a very unusual woman.

  • She was a mixed-race person from Samaria.
  • She had been segregated by society and was drawing water at noon.
  • Jesus is a foreigner to her.
  • She expected not to have a conversation with him.
  • Jesus asked her for a drink of water.
  • They had a conversation about water and at what Jesus could give her would be if refreshing water that would never end.
  • Now Jesus changes the subject.

Jesus asked her to call her husband and have him join them.

  • She said she didn’t have a husband.
  • Then Jesus began revealing his knowledge of her to her.
    • He told her that what she had said was right.
    • Then he said told her that she and had five husbands and the man she was with now wasn’t her husband.
    • That means she had been with six men.
    • And then he complimented her for at least being truthful with the words she had used.
      • She had not revealed everything to him but actually a very minimum.

It would be easy to get sidetracked on to the subject of marriage and marital relationships.

  • But that’s not what we need to do.
  • We might make a video on that subject soon.
  • But that’s not the subject that Jesus dealt with and neither will we.

The woman was trying to figure out who this man could be.

  • He was a man that was talking to her and most men did not talk to women in public.
  • The man was visiting with her and he was a foreigner.
    • That was unusual too.
  • The man had talked about water that flowed and would be eternally refreshing to her.
  • And now he is revealing that he knows about her marital life completely.
  • And because of her upcoming statement, he must have been very accurate.

What does Jesus know about you that you don’t want to share with anyone?

  • What secrets does Jesus know?
  • Jesus knows about any extra sex life?
  • Has Jesus heard lies?
  • Are there drugs he would know about?
  • Is there Jealousy he could know about?
  • Are there times when you had bouts of anger that Jesus could know about?
  • Have you been consuming alcohol?  Jesus would know if you did.

Jesus knows everything about you and me, just like he knows everything about this woman at the well.

  • Is that something you can be proud of or is it something you want to keep secret forever?

The Samaritan woman had only one answer and that it could be.

  • As a minimum she knew he was at least a prophet.
    • But she knew nothing greater than the prophet.
    • Was she correct?

How would you explain these ideas that she was trying to understand.

  • Could you point out something that she missed?
  • How are you going to explain to the same Jesus the kind of life you have been living?
    • Is it something you are excited to share with him, or will you be like her and tried to avoid the subject?

These are things in you need to consider.

  • Jesus always knows what you are doing and have done.
    • What will you do if he does not approve?
  • There are answers and we can help you find it.
    • Just let us know.
  • Remember every day that Jesus is aware.

We hope you will continue considering these things.

Until we can talk again, goodbye for now.
