“God Comforts Mourners” Script

What does it mean ““Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted”? “What is mourning?” “What is being mourned?” “What are some examples of people mourning? How can someone mourning be happy or blessed? What is comfort?” How does God comfort those who mourn?

We will answer questions like these in just a moment.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:4  “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.”

There are so many questions that need answers. Questions like, “What is mourning?” “What is being mourned?” “What are some examples of people mourning? How can someone mourning be happy or blessed? What does it mean ““Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted?” How does God comfort those who mourn?

But today, we are attempting to answer all these questions.

In researching this topic on the internet, I heard so many different points of view, and so few used Bible verses. With such an important, seemly paradoxical, statement of Jesus, it is necessary to study the book the phrase in question comes from. So, I will give you GOD’S answers to YOUR questions.

What kind of mourning is Jesus talking about? He uses the Greek word “pentheo”. It means to mourn, lament, grieve, even wail loudly, to be sad, or to feel guilt. This Greek word was used in the verses see here. The word includes sorrow for the death of a loved on. It includes sorrow for sin or condoning sin. And the grief of a man in a local church who showed repentance for the evil committed. It can include mourning over national tragedies. like the school shooting at Robe Elementary.

What are some examples of people mourning? Some examples include when Abraham mourned over the death of his wife Sarah. Or Job mourning his misfortunes of losing his vast wealth and the death of 10 children all in 1 day. How about when Jacob mourned for the “supposed” death of Joseph, his favorite son. The questions “What is being mourned?” and What should I be mourning over?” are a bit more complicated.

Do we, as a nation, grieve over sin? Are Americans sensitive to sin? We don’t recognize sin. We don’t cry over the wrongs done by others. Does the death of unborn aborted infants bring you sadness? Are you grieved over politicians who lie? Are problems and pain from divided homes even noticed? How about God-forbidden actions like immorality? Or about homosexuality? What about the effects of alcohol?

All these painful, destructive problems are the result of sin. Sin is the cause of all mourning.

When was the last time you grieved over hurting God when you sinned? When was the last time you said, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!”?

Until we take responsibility for our own sins can we begin to find the comfort God promised to mourners.

And that leads us to another question: “What is comfort?” The Greek word in Matt 5:4 is “parakaleo”. Greek scholars say it means to call near, admonish, persuade, intreat, address through exhortation and instruction.

Examples of being comforted include David being assured that Soloman, his son, would complete God’s temple. Hannah, the mother of Samuel the prophet, was comforted by her husband Elkanah. The apostles were comforted at the ascension of Jesus by 2 men. They were told in Acts 1:10-11  And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes,  (11)  and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” Timothy and Titus brought good reports from congregations Paul was deeply troubled. These reports comforted Paul.

God exhorted Elijah to stop his mourning over his situation and to “Go…” He got a new mission. Paul appealed to the Roman Christians to give themselves to God. Paul begged the Corinthians to reaffirm their love for a brother who was repenting of incest. Paul urged the Thessalonians to live to please God.

So, How can someone mourning be happy or blessed?”

In every situation where comfort was achieved there were two ideas present. First, someone was grieving, concerned, discouraged, or perplexed about a life situation or someone else besides themselves. Until you personally have these emotions for our nation, the sins of our nation, the lack of honor being given to God, our nation’s acceptance of sin-honoring groups, until then, comfort will not come.

Second, someone was sad, disappointed, discouraged, or misinformed about their personal sin. They were taking responsibility for their actions. This CAN become a Godly sorrow. Paul said, “2 Corinthians 7:10  For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.

When grief causes repentance, people are on the track that will lead, eventually, to their salvation, Salvation brings forgiveness. Salvation brings peace with God. Your Salvation can bring comfort to other Christians. NOW you are experiencing the comfort brought through the Holy Spirit. Your Salvation will give you the hope of living forever with Jesus.

You have a joy that is only found through Jesus. You are happy or blessed. Your mourning has been comforted through God in Jesus. It brings a confidence, not in yourself, but in the God’s abilities to love you no matter what. Remember what Paul told us about God’s love. God’s love will be there through tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, or sword. It is not affected by death, life, angels, rulers, the present, the future, no power, or anything else.

That is how a mourner can be comforted by God.
