Pain of the Passion Transcript
When people think of the suffering of Jesus many think of images are without agony, blood, or bruising.
Was the Garden of Gethsemane painful?
Why did Jesus said, Eli, Eli, lama sabacthani.
What effect did Judas’ betrayal have on Jesus.
What effect would an illegal trial have on Jesus?
How does his suffering figure into people being saved?
Let’s get busy answering questions.
INTRO
If we sort the events beginning with the Garden of Gethsemane until Jesus died, we can see that his pains and sufferings can be divided into 3 areas.
First are the Social Effects of his sufferings.
He told Peter, James, and John that he is under incredible stress. He tells them to stand watch while he prays. When he returned those 3 men were snoring. (Mark 14:37-38) Like they didn’t care. Like they weren’t listening?
Or what about when he was taken to Caiaphas place where the Sanhedrin began an illegal nighttime trial (Matthew 26.57). He was treated worse than a criminal. They searched for people to come and tell lies about Jesus so they could convict him (Matt 26.59-60). And no one was there to support Jesus(Mark 14.50). And the Spitting and slapping are purely intended as insults (Matt 26.67).
And then there is the accusations and mockery from the Roman officials.
The Jews brought Jesus before Pilate like he was a trouble maker. Luke said (Luke 23.2, 5) the charges ranged from misleading the nation and stirring up people up to stopping people from paying taxes and his claims of kingship. All lies. Slander NEVER feels good. He was disrespected.
And the soldiers targeted their hatred for the Jewish race on Jesus. They dressed him as the King of the Jews, with a crown of thorns mashed into his head. They snatched his scepter and hit him with it. Mockery.
Next is the Mental Suffering that Jesus experienced. These are the emotional sufferings that caused him additional stress in an already hostile environment.
First, Jesus took full responsibility for all the sins of mankind. How many billion people is that? How many sins is that?
This alone is great stress. Jesus had never sinned or experienced guilt.
But Jesus remained composed as Judas identified Jesus with a kiss. Jesus asks him (Luke 22:48) … “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”
Jesus must remain calm and in control of himself. Could you do it?
And the greatest of the mental pain came while hanging on the cross. Mark recorded, (Mark 15:34) “And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
God’s holiness and utter disdain for sin caused him to separate himself from his own son who was carrying your sin and mine. Jesus was alone for the first time. Jesus said this to tell you and me how great his suffering was.
On the judgment day, people will be separated from God being sent to hell unless they make changes. No one wants to suffer that type of loneliness for eternity.
The Third type of pain is the physical pain Jesus suffered. This is the easiest to recognize.
The Bible tells us plainly that he was struck or punched (Matt 26:67). Twisted thorns were stuck into his head. (John 19.2-3).
The scourging was torture (Matt 27:26). A whip-like device with sharp objects attached was used. It would tear, rip, and shred the back, sides, and chest. The Jews had a limit of 39 lashes, but Jesus suffered this at the hands of the Romans. There was no limit. Many criminals died here before they got to the cross.
And then there was the cross up on Golgotha (Mark 15:22). Lawbreakers were laid on the cross with arms extended. Spikes were driven through the hands and feet. There was a terrible jolt as the cross was lifted and then dropped into a hole.
Now the real agony begins. Each breath was demanding. He pushed up on the nails in his feet to get a few quick breaths, then sagged on his nailed hands. Repeated over and over. Picture the blood loss, the growing fever, the recurring cramps, and his exposed tissues. Pain ravaged Jesus’ body.
Finally, Jesus sent his spirit from his body and died.
Jesus suffered socially, mentally, and physically.
Why? What was The Purpose of His Suffering?
God is both just and loving. His justice demands punishment for sins. Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, …”
And all of us have sinned (Romans 3:23). Because of our bad choices everyone is hell-bound.
Graciously, God provided a substitute. His Son took all the punishment and pain we deserved. God redeems us from Satan. The Corinthian Christians were told, (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) “ Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? you are not your own, (20) for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
Romans 6 also says, “ Romans 6:23 …, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
