FREEDOM FROM WRATH
This is FREEDOM week, the week of the 4th of July.
I hope you are planning a simple and enjoyable day of remembering the cost of our country’s
freedom.
So today I want to tell you about how to be FREE from Wrath from the book of Romans.
Romans is a book that can produce dread, fear, terror, even panic.
Listen to these verses:
Rom_1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and
unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
Rom 1.24
Rom 1.26
Rom 1.28
Romans 2:4-6 ESV Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and
patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? (5) But because
of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath
when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. (6) He will render to each one according to
his works:
Romans 2:8 ESV but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey
unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.
What is Wrath?
Wrath is illustrated throughout the OT
● What happened to Sodom and Gomorrah? Where are they? No one knows exactly. God
pour out his wrath on them.
● Joshua 22:20 ESV Did not Achan the son of Zerah break faith in the matter of the
devoted things, and wrath fell upon all the congregation of Israel? And he did not perish
alone for his iniquity.’”
But in Romans God’s wrath is not on a nation, not on the Jewish race or the Gentiles.
It is on anyone, and everyone who does what God has said NOT to do, and for those who chose
NOT TO DO the things they should.
● Because of their wrong actions, and lack of action, they are just as guilty before God as
Sodom and Gomorrah.
● These folks deserve God’s wrath.
Now, pay attention to what Paul writes to these Christians living in Rome.
● Romans 5:6-9 ESV For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the
ungodly. (7) For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a
good person one would dare even to die— (8) but God shows his love for us in that
while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (9) Since, therefore, we have now been
justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
○ Just as if we had never sinned
○ Even more is that Jesus saves us from God’s severe anger
Listen to the words also found in Rom 5:10
● “For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son,
much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.”
What do I need to do to avoid God’s wrath? To stop being God’s enemy? To gain his
friendship?
● Romans 1:17 ESV For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it
is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
Faith is a 2-part word
■ It has the mental side.
● I examine the evidence presented about Jesus and determine that He
must be God’s Son.
■ It has an action side.
● Luke 6:46 ESV “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I
tell you?
● When you believe He is God’s son, you will do whatever He says.
● He is divine, just like His Father.
● If he says to change, we change
● If he says to talk about him, we talk about him.
● If he was to tell us to do something strange, like being immersed in
water, well, we will go find someone who will help us do it.
