Temptation: Needs or Wants?

Living in America with our instant gratifications stirs up a pot of muddy water. It makes it more difficult to distinguish between Needs and Wants. This plays right into the Devil’s temptations. If you wrestle with them, you will fall into his traps.

Benefit

This video will show you how to separate needs and wants,  and how YOU CAN combat his temptations.

INTRO 4

Let’s begin by determining what is fundamental to human life. These are called NEEDS. There are 4 basic needs: food, clothes, shelter. But God determined that it was not good for man to be alone so he created Adam a helper – Eve. So the NEEDS are a mate, food, clothes, and shelter.

Anything more is considered as WANTS.

In “Do Temptations Kill” we spoke of 3 different kinds of temptation. 1 John 2:16 speaks about the “desires of the flesh”. The need for food was Satan’s first attempt at causing Jesus to sin.

Mankind NEEDS food. (But some of us enjoy it too much!)  Remember how Eve saw the forbidden fruit. It is written that she “saw that it was good for food.” (Gen 3.6). The fruit would have met the physical NEEDS. Her problem was she listened to Satan’s lies and WANTED more.

In the case of Jesus, being hungry wasn’t really the problem. The temptation was to FOLLOW SATAN’S SUGGESTION and turn the stones into bread. But that would mean that he was LISTENING to Satan. He would be paying attention to the GREATEST LIAR of all time. Jesus himself said in John 8.44 that Satan is the father of lies. How wise would it have been for Jesus to listen to him??

So, Jesus used one of the keys we discussed in “Do Temptations Kill?”(found in additional resources below). He SAW a way out. His way out was scripture. “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by EVERY WORD that comes FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD.’” (Matt 4.4; Deut.  8:3)

Real living and conquering Temptation requires 1) accurate knowledge of what God expects, and 2) Looking for the keys.

Have you been LISTENING to Satan? WHEN did he lie to you? Is he already in control because you didn’t know what God’s demands are? Or maybe you WEREN’T LOOKING for an ESCAPE from temptation
